Mazda MX-5: fastest version yet to race Aston Martin, Lotus and Nissan

The fastest and most powerful version yet of the Mazda MX-5 will take on the likes of the Aston Martin N24, Lotus Evora GT4 and Nissan 370Z in the British GT Championship for the 2012 season.

The MX-5 GT4 is a race-prepped version of Mazda’s iconic soft-top stripped to just 1000kg (including 150kg of ballast) with its 2.0-litre four-cylinder tuned to pump out 231kW through a six-speed sequential Hewland gearbox.

The package nets 0-100km/h in three seconds and sees a top speed of 257km/h, which Mazda says makes this the world's quickest MX-5.

The team believes the combination of the lightweight MX-5 GT4’s outstanding handling and high fuel economy will make it not only easier on its tyres but will mean less time in the pits and more time on track.

The British GT Championship consists of nine rounds over seven weekends, with the first race at Oulton Park in Cheshire on April 7-9.
