Renaultsport to become separate brand: report

According to recent international reports, Renault's sports car division, Renaultsport, could be about to become its own stand-alone brand. The first car to be developed under the brand is said to be a road-going version of the Renault Dezir concept.

In a recent Autocar report in the UK, Renault product manager Beatrice Foucher, said the Renaultsport brand was already perceived as its own brand by some consumers and that the company wanted to develop that further.

"We will continue working on derivative versions of the Mégane, for example, because that’s a terrific car and excellent for us. But we also need specific models only for Renaultsport. We have started working on that; we’re thinking of small volumes, where there are good business models."

Although it is early days, the company has mentioned it could support two to three unique models on its own that showcase sports car layouts that step away from the traditional hatchback designs. Reports speculate that such models could include a production version of the Renault Dezir concept we previewed at last year's Paris Motor Show.

New models would also include a number of hot hatchbacks including one that will be based on the 2012 Renault Clio. This model is set to debut sometime in 2012 wearing a similar design language to the Renault Dezir concept.

We'll have to wait and see to know for sure, however. Stay tuned.
