2013 Peugeot 601 four-door coupe rumours emerge

Automotive sources in Germany have revealed Peugeot might be thinking of recreating a Peugeot 601, a badge first launched in 1933. Reports say the new model would offer a luxury four-door coupe layout and say it could hit the market some time in 2013.

An internal source within Peugeot has reportedly revealed some future plans that include the development of other luxury sedans to be based on the upcoming Peugeot 508 platform. Peugeot has confirmed the platform will be used as a foundation of many other models in the future. This could include a new luxury four-door coupe, dubbed the Peugeot 601, which would replace the current Peugeot 607. The new model might also use design cues from the Peugeot 5 Concept (pictured).

Engine and drivetrain packages are said to remain similar to those offered in the Peugeot 508. However, reports say the 601 will also be available in two- and four-wheel drive layout. Engine packages will range from small turbo diesel options, including a 1.6-litre turbo outputting around 150kW, through to a 3.0-litre V6 offering up to 205kW. A super-efficient diesel hybrid version is also likely.

Peugeot is keeping plans tightly under wraps at this stage but when asked about the possibility of such a model, the company hasn't denied any 601 development.

If plans do eventuate, the model would rival the likes of the Volkswagen Passat CC and the Audi A5 Sportback. We'll keep you informed.
