Volvo XC60 wins World Car of the Year
Audi takes luxury honours, BMW wins the performance gong
The mid-size Volvo XC60 has taken out World Car of the Year, beating the Mazda CX-5 and Range Rover Velar to the coveted title.
There were 34 models entered in the award, which was cut down to just 10 competitors and then the three finalists listed above.
A panel of 82 automotive journalists from 24 countries is responsible for voting on the award, and the votes are tallied by KPMG.
“I am pleased to see our company’s product investments paying off,” said Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars. “We are up against some tough competition, but this award for the XC60 shows that Volvo has the right combination of design, connectivity and safety that appeals to customers across the world.”
CarAdvice is among the XC60's fans: Mike Costello said the D5 R-Design "makes significant improvements over its tired predecessor", describing at as "a genuine match for the best luxury SUVs Germany can muster".
Other award winners included the BMW M5, which took World Performance Car of the Year, while the Nissan Leaf won World Green Car of the Year. Audi scooped the luxury car award with its high-tech A8 flagship.
Previous winners of the WCOTY include the Jaguar F-Pace (2017), Mazda MX-5 (2016) and Mercedes-Benz C-Class (2015).
