Toyota teases new SUV
Japanese brand to debut new concept at LA show.
Toyota's newest SUV concept is set to emerge from the shadows at the upcoming 2017 Los Angeles Motor show.
The soon to be revealed FT-AC concept was depicted in the Japanese brand's latest teaser image in the lead up to the late November LA show.
FT-AC stands for Future Toyota Adventure Concept and if history tells us anything Toyota’s range of FT concepts usually signal a coming production model. But what does the FT-AC point to?
Adventure certainly looks to be high on the list of the FT-AC’s priorities. Although the moodily lit teaser gives away little, it does at least show a set of wide, plastic-clad wheel arch flares up front with matching matte-plastic mirror covers for an aesthetic tie in.
Besides that there is little to see apart from a heavily sculpted bonnet and - curiously for an off-road vehicle - a lower lip at the bottom of the front bumper that looks as if it would only hamper maximum approach angle.
LED lighting also plays a prominent role in the car’s styling with headlights, front fogs and roof-mounted auxiliary lights all illuminated with diode technology. Those upper lights are also joined by a set of chunky roof rails.
It is rumoured that the FT-AC may be an evolved version of the FT-4X off-roader shown at the 2017 Detroit motor show in January.
If that is the case Toyota could be planning a second small SUV to sell alongside the wild-looking and urban focused C-HR, but with a more capable off-road skew.
However, given the LA show’s US-centric focus the FT-AC may depict a new version of the American market 4Runner or Sequoia large SUVs or even the Tacoma pickup.
