Yes, you read correctly. The latest rumours about the Lamborghini Estoque say the four-door sedan will go into production, and, it will be manufactured in China. Well, those are the rumours anyway.

A couple of weeks ago, Lamborghini CEO, Stephan Winkelmann, said Lamborghini is considering production of the Estoque as it could boost sales for the company. Reports to come from Chinese media publications and Gasgoo.com are now saying the Estoque will indeed be built and in China.

As far as we know, the car hasn’t been tested or developed and is not ready for production, but Chinese media sites are getting very excited about this rumour – whether true or not – and have even found a price tag for the concept. Sources say the Estoque will cost US$589,000 (AU$663,000).

The websites also say the car will go into production in 2012. We’ll have to keep an eye on this one and try to figure out if these rumours are true.

  • Dave

Great news about the Estoque being built. Seems odd to build it in china

  • Bold

Lamborghini sales figure is strong in asia-pacific. Being the largest auto-mobile market, and soon the largest luxury car market, I won’t be surprised luxury models will be built there locally, the issue is when.

  • Tony

    it’s pretty simple

China is the largest market for Lamborghinis

If they make them in China they gain significant profit because the Chinese govt. does not charge exhorbitant tariffs on locally made cars.

I surprised CA did not state this.

Being a VW company it would not surprise me if they leverage the current VW factories already there.

  • Fenno

I’ll buy a german brand built in South Africa…
I’ll buy a Japanese Brand built in Thailand
I’d probably even buy a Korean brand built in Australia
But if I was to spend half a million plus on an Italian
Exoticar, I want it built in Italy…Not in China.

    • MJ

i agree, for 600k i’d want it to be built somewhere that you can be proud of. Don’t think you’ll find many people boasting about how their lambo has a made in china sticker on it

    • shag

doesn’t matter where it is built, you will not rich enough to buy it anyway

    • Bold

don’t worry, car makers understand this, plus, demand in chinese market will exceed their capacity for quite some time, if they do build the cars in china

    • Shak

Would you not purchase a new 3DTV because of its origin or because of how it performs? Most of the things around you are made in countries that people percieve to be of lower quality.

      • Robert

for someone with “a lot of opinions” like you, who are comparing an outsourced 3k Tv to a half a million dollar fine piece of machinery. you really shouldn’t be on this site. it’d have to be a chinese made lamborghini kit car for me to buy it. and a low price of 30k

  • yowie

Hi Fenno, it’s not about you. It’s about those Chinese buyers.

  • Moe

Why China keep it at home in italy hope these are only rumours

  • Tony

That’s pretty much it. VW doesn’t care about the rest of the world. They would be very happy making this car China market only.

To put this into perspective, the VW lines around the world run for about 3-4 days and that is the entire Australian VW distribution for the year.

So in that light, how much do you think VW cares about Australia and moreso, how little do you think Lamborghini cares about Australia? Less than 1/2 of 1%.

    • Andrew

I know perfectly well our market doesn’t count for squat, but making this car in China will make it dead on arrival not only here, but in Europe and USA as well. Unless they plan to price it as a Chinese disposable rubbish rather than Italian exotica – which they clearly do not.

Can Lamborghini afford to allienate *all* of their markets other than China? Maybe they feel they can, but I suspect it will turn out to be a very short sighted strategy.

      • Andrew

… and to add to my post… would there really be that many buyers in China? Oh, I know there are many Chinese who are very, very rich indeed. But think about it: would they want to buy Chinese car themselves? No way! It’s all about the image, and snobbery – the truth is they also want the Italian exotica, not another locally made car!

  • vti07

As China is Left hand drive like the US, it automatically excludes countries which drive on the “correct” side of the road.

  • Baddass

Several reliable sources have stated in their magazines that this is nothing but a rumour. It’s true that Lambo is seriously considering building the Estoque (even that hasn’t been confirmed, let alone where it’s built), and if it did, China would be a major market, but it is extremely unlikely to be built there.
I know Audis and the like are built in China, but they are a different proposition entirely to the Estoque, where to maintain its heritage and brand cachet, would have to be built in Italy. But I can’t wait until Lambo makes this, wherever it’s built!

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au It’s true

Nothing wrong having a car built in China ! its under volkswagen supervision but they should pass the built savings to us.
i bought the new 2010 vw GTI and its built in China beijing plant . It save’s them money but i still payd $46.000 and that’s wrong .

    • Luke Brinsmead

I thought the new Golf 6 is assembled in Germany, unless VW are lying to us?

      • http://www.caradvice.com.au It’s true

All vw golf mark 6 GTI come from China this time around . mark 5 was south Africa . the ones built in germany are for germany only too expensive to ship it here to australia .

        • Fenno

          Wrong….
All Hatch derivatives of the Golf are built in Wolfsburg.
The only chinese VW ever sold in Australia were the very
          very very limited polo sedan.

  • nickdl

So we’re sure that it’s not just a Chinese copy of the Estoque with a 2.4L 4 cyl…

  • Adam

    ‘Lamborghini. Made in China’.

  • http://www.caradvice.com.au Jim Goose

Bloody elle! The Chinese will be making our Falcadores next, and our VB! If I want to buy a car made in China,I’ll buy a crumbling wall! I may be old fashioned, but if I buy a car purporting to be an italian car,I expect it to be made in Italy. Cheap labor talks. If only china had unions….

  • Luke Brinsmead

This is not Lamborghini – a practical car with the “MADE IN CHINA” sticker on the compliance plate. What is the auto world coming to. Those control buttons look just stupid as well. Lambo should just focus on what they do better than anyone else, except for Ferrari of course, and that’s interesting super fast sports cars which are made Italia.

  • nickdl

It’s gonna resemble my model Murcielago with the Made in China sticker…

    • http://autos.globaltimes.cn/index.html Jerry

don’t worry, this is false news.read the news here:http://autos.globaltimes.cn/index.html
Volkswagen’s public relations consultant Alma Gu told the Global Times today that news saying the four-door sedan Lamborghini Estoque will be produced in China in 2012 are unfounded.

      • nickdl

Yeah didn’t think it would happen.

I’d be happy for it to happen… if it cost around $150,000. But there’s no way Lamborghini would make their brand that mainstream. As much as they want extra sales, they still want to remain somewhat exotic.
