For Mazda fans, 2002 was the year the 626 was replaced with the 6 and Mazda began the new generation of models which included the Mazda2 (121), Mazda3 (323) and CX-7. With almost 65,000 Mazda6 owners in Australia alone, the 2nd genration Mazda6 has a lot riding on its shoulders.
The new Mazda6 is longer, wider, more powerful and fuel efficient than before. Although official prices are still unconfirmed, $30,000 should see you driving away in an entry model 6.
Offered in sedan, hatch and wagon, all models are powered by a newly developed 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine with 125kW and 226 Nm of torque. Australia will not see the V6 any time soon.
In another step towards better road safety, the new Mazda6 will come standard with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Traction Control (TCS) across the range.
Other standard features include air-conditioning, remote keyless entry, power mirrors and windows, remote central locking, six airbags, ABS anti-lock brakes and MP3 player connectivity.
From the inside, Mazda have gone for a “Bold and Exquisite” design theme. However, with the entire Mazda range emphasising a sporty Zoom-Zoom, the 6 receives a snug, cockpit-like driving environment.
The new 6 has also received its share of suspension updates, for the front, the high-mounted double-wishbone front suspension is mounted on a subframe now attached to the body at six points instead of four. For the rear, the front pivot of the trailing link is now placed higher to reduce tail-lift under braking, and the dampers are mounted more upright to improve the leverage acting on them.
The Mazda6 faces some tough new competition from Ford’s recently released Mondeo as well as Skoda’s Octavia.

Any word on the transmissions, 6 speed auto?
6-speed manual /5-speed Activematic for sedan and hatch
wagon only available in auto
There goes the idea that the new 6 would have a 6 speed auto!
hmmmm
That’s a beautiful looking car. Two gripes: wish it had more power, and wish it was RWD (yes I know, I’m biased though)
looks very lexus-ish…
Yeah, I thought we were going to get a 6-speed auto as well. I wonder what happened?
Whats the go with the existing MPS, is there anything coming..?
agree with ImportJap…. why can’t these Jap manufacturers actually make a rwd medium size car??? if it looks and handles anything like the Mazda 6, it’ll just sell like hot cakes… it amazes me that they still can’t learn this simple engineering nirvana! just look at Saab and Toyota Aurion… massive power and fwd… no matter how much tinkering you do, you just can’t change the laws of physics!!!
Gosh I hope a certain person doesn’t find this thread with what you said Ethan Aras, I absolutely agree with you but look at any thread thats over 50 posts long and it always because its degenerated into a FWD vs RWD or a toyota vs rest of the world argument. MOTOR said something about the new MPS using the 2.5 L engine and doing that up with direct injection and turbo and all that malarky. Should be fairly phenominal, providing it still has AWD.
Cough Cough… he will be researching that as it involves Toyota. We should call him after the Pope (i.e. Pope Toyota Paul I)….
Oh god here go………….hahaha.Behave you two!
Missile, just think of the endless possibilities of a Pope Mobile – well he goes on about bulletproof reliability and Toyota being the largest car maker will have the resources for bulletproof glass. We all now how fussy he is on the bulletproof subject. Nothing further to add! I rest my case!
SSSHHHHHH!
Paul is good. Iam just trying to get some on here to awaken the humour as all serious little tonka toys playing smash up derby with the car maker they love!
Speaking of the Aurion, I think Mazda have taken a few too many design cues from that car with the new 6. Hope this isn’t indicative of where they’re going with their other lines.
Da most modern-looking production car eva. Watch out Camry
The new 2008 Mazda6 looks like is going to make good sales for mazda in the next few years. The new Mazda2 is already doing well and CX-9 coming out soon. For a relatively small brand, I think Mazdas are very stylish and fun-to drive cars. Looks like the new 6 is going to be my next car.
Still have the Japanese and Mazda looks…good job…
