Toyota FT-86 heroes of the past wallpapers

By George Skentzos |

Once upon a time Toyota made some seriously exciting cars like the Supra, Celica GT-Four and iconic Corolla AE86.

With its new generation of performance cars taking shape, Toyota has showcased the performance bloodline of the upcoming Toyota FT-86 (Future Toyota-86) Sports Concept.

The Toyota Corolla AE86 staked its reputation with its front-engine, rear-wheel drive powertrain, compact dimensions, light weight, impeccable balance and strong power to weight ratio.

More than 20 years later, Toyota is returning to these performance principles in order to recapture the spirit of the AE86, sharing its front-engine, rear-wheel drive credentials.

Toyota’s European design and development centre dubs the styling of the Toyota FT-86 “Functional Beauty”, crafting a low, compact, light and aerodynamic bodyshell.

The Toyota FT-86 measures just 4,160mm long, 1,760mm wide and 1,260mm tall, with a 2,570mm wheelbase – making the car as compact as possible.

The more pics I see of this car, the more I want to own one…

  • AJ

I was hoping the Hyundai Genesis would come to Australia, but if Toyota bring the FT86 to Australia im getting one.
Looks amazing, and a RWD coupe is exactly what i want.

    BRING IT TO OZ….

    • ADLover

Buy from Toyota or Subaru, you wouldn’t disappoint.
Hyundai? are they have decent RWD? I think NO~~~~.

      • Shak

They do. The Genesis, they just dont seem to know how to get it down to us.

      • o

your joking arent you?? the genesis has been rated on par with the 5 series

  • Valet Dabess

    it’s so pretty…

  • deco

If te FT-86 comes to Australia with a turbo 4, I’m going to be all over it.

Only Toyota I really want to own.

  • Jester

Finally a Toyota that is desireable. Lets just see how long it will take them to bring it into Oz, hope it will be a great car since this is the only car that may make me wait till mid 2011 for the new toy. If its less than 60K on the road it could be a great buy.

  • XYZ

I will buy one of these when it arrives, as a weekend toy.

  • Shak

If they can price this around or below WRX and EVO territory, they will definetly steal sales because people will see a Toyota, and think Reliability, and quality, But they wont be suspecting that it can drive well.

    • Baddass

Who buys a sports car for the reliability and quality? And if they didn’t suspect it would drive well, why would they buy one over an Evo or WRX?

I don’t think it will be particulary cheap when it arrives here, perhaps close to the 40-45K mark.

  • http://www.tune86.com Ft86 fan

    cant wait to drive it!!

  • UMWAHT

i still think that around 50k is a bit too much for this car, but being that in Australia all cars are too expensive, what better car can you get for under 50?

the audi s3 is over 60k. BMW 135i is over 70k, even the 130i is over 60k on-road. Mazda RX-8 is over 50k. 370z is over 70k. both the Evo and WRX are over 60k

for under 50k the only sport cars worth considering the Civic Type R, Golf GTI, Mazda MX-5 and….thats it i guess? so if you want a fun cheap (eh..) RWD car the FT-86 will be a great choice

then again you can always buy used..

    • matt

i think it should be priced along with hot hatches 39990 tops

    • JP

I’m confident you could add Ford XR-5 Turbo and now the VW Polo GTI to sports cars under 50K.

    • redfox

You’re forgetting the Mazda3 MPS, another excellent hot hatch.

  • Nov

Finally Toyota are adding a performance car to it’s current line up.

    • t

well, its supposed to be… lets see what its like when it gets here.

  • The Oracle’s Teacher

This is the best looking car Toyota has penned. Ever.

    • Robin Graves

Then they ruin it by slapping in a clunky, horrible sounding tube-of-glue boxer when it should have a high-revving inline 4 like the original AE86. Why ruin a chance like this?

      • ADLover

Well, obviously you never drive Subaru before do you?
I guess normal inline 4 doesn’t fit under this bonnet.

        • sikmrex

suby engine has a great sound imo! Are you for real Robin?

          • Robin Graves

Its a Toyota AE86 not a Subaru “Wrecks”. 4AGE was a legendary engine in its day, smooth and ultra high revving thanks to its Yamaha multi-valve head. Why mongrelise a legend with a engine that has no resemblance to the original DNA? And yes, I do think Subaru engines sound horrible, I like the smooth sound of an inline-4 revving like a windmill in a hurricane. Carry on all you like, its an OPINION. Something wearing an AE86 badge should fit the profile.

  • Tom22

They better give it more power

bur wait, than it might accelerate uncontrollably.

    • bert b

Only if you were driving it TOM!

  • Dick Justice

can’t wait to see the production model

  • http://www.neoespresso.com neoespresso

This good looking coupe should sell for Mid $50K if it has WRX performance and a Toyota quality finish.

  • AJ

Even if it has a subaru boxer engine, it will make modding it very easy.

    STI power anyone?

  • http://www.betweentwopoints.com Andy

I wouldn’t be after earth-shattering acceleration in this, personally. I’d rather take great balance and lightness over extra kilowatts.

Extra power is the modders job.

I’ve always wanted a car like this one, but with a more accessible price tag over the RX8 and 370Z. I look forward to seeing it, but I’d hope for a WRX-ish price tag. If the MX5 can get away with it, then surely a coupe would too?

  • mrxandthexfactor

Beautiful on the outside, lovely to look at, soothing to the eye but is it good to drive? we’ll have to wait and see. It is better to come to Australia sooner rather than later.

  • HachiRoku

    I have 2 original AE86 1 is bog-Standard in near-mint condition and one is heavily modified…but the FT86 would be a great adition…want one
