Honda CR-V, Accord Australian recall expands

By Matt Brogan |

As part of a worldwide recall, Honda Australia has today expanded its recent local recall of 1,323 Honda Accord and 22 Honda CR-V units produced between 2001 and 2002 by a further 703 vehicles.

The recall was issued to replace the driver’s SRS airbag inflator which, although yet to malfunction, is believed to contain a defective propellant (the chemical substance which generates gas to inflate the airbag) that may rupture the inflator’s casing in turn causing fragments of airbag parts to scatter possibly causing injury to occupants.

As a preventative measure, Honda Australia will replace the inflator assembly in all vehicles affected by the recall.

Vehicles now include 2,026 Honda Accord models produced between 2001 and 2002 and 22 Honda CR-V models produced in 2002.

This is probably good PR for Honda. They are telling owners of 8 – 10 year old cars well outside of warranty to come in a they will fix up something. You’d be pretty comfortable with that as a Honda owner or a potential Honda Owner, wouldnt you, especially in the context of their rivals allegedly hiding problems with new cars and selling regardless. “let me see, buy a Toyota who have allegedly been knowingly selling dangerously defective new cars whilst actively concealing the extent of the problem, or should I buy a Honda, who will fix a hitherto unknown problem 10 years after I bought it and years outside of warranty? Hmmmmm…” And the cost of this brilliant PR? Repairs to a couple of thousand cars maximum. I’m not saying it isnt genuine, but it’s great timing.

So are you sure no one was hurt during this 8-10 years of time? If someone was hurt, he/she wouldn’t see this as a good PR but a cover up and negligence for all those years.

      • Peter

No Ray, I’m not. But I am confident that while you are there to champion their cause, they will achieve justice. You go get that evil big corporation, Tiger – you have my full and unqualified support. I recommend that you start by watching “Erin Brockovich” (sp?), which will ignite your passion even further. Then move on to “Class Action” which I have to say I prefer, but mainly because I find Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio more my cup of tea than Julia Roberts (in fact, I dont really like either of them, but I am yet to find my favorite actress Belladonna in any mainstream movie). Good luck with it, mate.

I read that it was 400,000 car world wide. Even it was only $500 for parts and labor to replace the airbag, that’s $200,000,000 Expensive advertising

Actually this is part of a recall involving over 900,000 cars, many injuries and at least one recorded death.
      Hardly a PR excercise!

      • Peter

        there goes my theory!

  • Fast Car

The Ford Explorer with the so called cruise control problem is 8 years old and the guy who was driving it is now driving around in a G6E loan car from Ford!! Nice scam mate !!! Isnt that great PR too? I might try that one myself!!!

    • Peter

Apples and oranges, not that I can be bothered debating it. Honda come off as a responsible corporate citizen, recalling 10 year old cars for something that hasnt even happened yet. Ford are running around trying to put out fires with a problem that they cant say whether it exists or not. “Errr, well someone says this car might take off on you and belt around at 100kph plus and cant be stopped, but we cant find out why, and we dont really know whether it’s true”. The ford issue is bad for them, coz they cant say one way or another, and they’ll look like bullies if they call the driver a fibber. Very delicate, and I dont envy them that. Honda know about a problem in an old car, and are fixing it without any obvious outside influence. That’s gotta look good for them in the context of other recalls at the moment. Not as good as no recall at all, but hey, if you’ve got lemons, make lemonade.

    I have a 02 Cr-v. How do i find out if i’m affected?

    • http://www.caradvice.com.au Matt Brogan

      Hi Dennis,

Honda Australia will contact owners by mail. If you are the second owner of the vehicle, or just wish to expedite the process, you can contact Honda Australia on 1800 804 954.

      Regards, Matt.

      • Dennis

        Thanks for the response Matt.

    New Hondas=Chinese Quality!!!

  • Paddy

Guess I’ll buy a Honda now, kill myself in a crash next year, and 9 years after that get a letter sent to my coffin saying my car is being offered a free repair then…

  • vt07

Recalls can affect reputation of brands and the effect can last a considerable amount of time. For example, it took a while before people forgot about faulty welds in early Hyundai Excels.

Old Hondas= Excellent Outstanding Modern day KIA quality.

  • Ben

I can’t abide comments about Honda being so responsible while my new Honda Accord Euro pings like crazy, even after a so-called “fix” has been applied. Seriously, a brand new car that pings out of the factory – and it’s a widespread issue. Honda are not what they used to be.

  • Ken

Honda made in China? Ease up, a bit of a slur, surely?
    I just bought an 07 CR-V.
It says Thailand. Now that IS quality!
