A special Subaru BRZ has been teased this week on social media, with the Japanese manufacturer’s US arm uploading this single image of an STI-branded rear wing on Instagram this week.

The photo, captioned with “Stay tuned…6/8/17. #STI”, depicts a large carbon-fibre rear wing on the bootlid of the BRZ sports car with an STI (Subaru Technica International) stamp on the end plate – could Subaru finally be plotting a turbocharged variant?

It’s unclear what exactly this special model will feature, though it’s worth noting the wing is similar in design to that used on the 2015 Subaru BRZ Performance concept (below), which not only featured an aggressive body and aero package, but also a turbocharged version of the company’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine from the BRZ GT300 race car – outputs are estimated at 225kW of power and 450Nm of torque.

A turbocharged BRZ could be the car so many enthusiasts have been waiting for, with all previous special editions and performance-oriented variants featuring cosmetic, interior, and mechanical upgrades to components like brakes and suspension, but no engine changes.

However, Subaru has consistently hosed down rumours of a forced-induction BRZ, at least in its current generation, indicating that this new version could be another track-inspired edition with aero upgrades and more focused suspension and brake packages.

Meanwhile, June 8 happens to be the same date as the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy time-attack event – a race which Subaru has been involved in for numerous years, and currently holds the record for four-wheel vehicles with a heavily-modified WRX STI co-developed with Prodrive (below).

What this could mean, then, is that Subaru’s STI division is working on a special BRZ-based race car to attempt its own record at the Isle of Man event.

For now, we’ll have to wait until June 8 to see what the Japanese company is teasing, fingers crossed it’s the BRZ STI we’ve been wishing for.

Stay tuned…6/8/17. #STI
