Audi’s latest e-tron concept

By Matt Brogan |

Audi unveiled its latest e-tron concept car at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The e-tron is a low slung two door sports car powered by a pair of electric motors.

The concept car looks almost production ready and follows a series of earlier show cars that looked more like small Audi R8s. This latest version has its own design language, a muscular two seat Audi.

Weighing 1350 kg and powered by two mid mounted electric motors with a combined output of 152kW. Having a good power to weight ratio allows the car to sprint to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.

According to Audi its use of efficient batteries and electronics gives the car a range of 250 km.

E-tron’s low weight comes from the Audi Space Frame designed aluminium structure. All the “add on” parts like doors, bonnet, roof and front guards are made of fibre-reinforced plastic to save on weight.

Featuring a production ready interior with simple controls and a revised MMI scroll pad with a touch sensitive surface on the steering wheel. A smart phone is able to be inserted into a slot allowing the audio and video functions of the phone to be accessed by the car.

    Does it still have 4500nm?

    • lazybones

      Its down to 2650NM.

Not sure about the 2 rear mounted motors. The original design had 4 in-wheel motots. Still looks awesome, but at what price?

I think they are doing different stages of the Concept. They said it would evolve to make it more production ready.

Thats right. Two mid mounted electric motors aren’t as efficient as the in-wheel-motors (theoretically). Even more is that the space where the mid mounted motors now sit takes up space that could have been put to better use. I would also like to add that 4 in-wheel motors might give rise to a lower center of gravity (thats just maybe). Lets hope that Audi has its reasons and that they are good.

Looks like the offspring of a wild night between the r8 and a tt with some AM looking lights on the rear for good measure…. i do like this though but it might just take away some of the TT customers and move them over to this. Why not just build an electric tt? Probably a million reasons.

Happy they have continued with similar wheels as the original concept.

I don’t like the looks of this one compared to the original etron. Strange proportions, sliced off front and rear, and rear wheelarch leads awkwadly onto the tail lights. I heard that Audi is now going to advertise the actual usable torque figures: down from 2650Nm to a little more realistic 200-300Nm.

i think it looks fantastic, especially from the front, damn… the only thing i worry about with electric cars is where do you charge them when you go on a road trip?

  • numb1er

Looks really good, especially if ur a murderer or a drug dealer. Seems to be plenty of boot space there in the back

Comments: This Audi looks great, almost fantastic. The front is retro and the rear has an almost old-school/square look that has been modernized. The wheels are debatable yet a brave move (typically Audi). And the rear window seems to have a Testarossa/Charger look.
Questions: How long will it take to recharge?

Wont this make the TT redundant??

To be honest i think the TT should be finished with they are getting a bit boring they had their day
