Daimler seeks new small car partner for 2010

By Matt Brogan |

Speaking to German newspaper Handelsblatt, Daimler CEO Mr Dieter Zetsche, has hinted that the firm is in talks with several firms to secure a partnership that will help build its next generation of compact cars.

One of these firms is thought to be French car manufacturer Renault, with the new partnership rumoured to form from as early as mid-2010.

Daimler’s luxury car brand, Mercedes-Benz, plans to launch four new compact cars to replace the current A- and B-Class models when they reach the end of their product cycles towards the end of next year.

Both Daimler and Renault have previously admitted to be in talks over a new family of small cars, with Daimler looking for a new range of engines for its models and Renault seeking a low-cost platform for its cars.

The A and B-Class have always been strange cars to me. Neither is a proper 1-Series rival (in terms of size and performance), are all rather overpriced and the A200 Turbo is a lukewarm Merc for hot hatch money.

A class has been around a few more years than 1 Series. Having been a current shape A & B class owner I understand people dont ‘get’ the whole A/B Class thing. Most people I know who have an A or B class either have an SLK/CLK or some other sort of vehicle in their garage that is not practical. I have found both the A & current B class that I own to be Tardis like with internal space. Sure I am not going to win any traffic light grand prix but coming from a Gen 4 & 5 Golf previously both the A & B have been the best daily drivers I have had with excellent fuel economy, safety and servcing.

It’s good to see Mercedes Benz considering linking up with Renault. I think this will be a very good boost to their sort of lacking lower end car line.
Hopefully it will be a much better match then Chrysler or Mitsubishi has been for them, and I want to wish them the best of luck.
