New Lotus Elise confirmed for 2020

The next-generation Lotus Elise will arrive in 2020, Jean-Marc Gales, the company's boss, has confirmed.

Talking to Autocar, Gales confirmed that Lotus has begun work on its next-generation sports car range. The news comes on the heels of the company's first profit, which took place in August, and is the first time the company has been in the black since 2000.

The new Elise is due on the market in 2020, and will be slightly larger than today's car. Under the skin, the next-generation Elise will use a new version of the company's now signature bonded and extruded aluminium chassis.

Unlike the current vehicle, the new Elise and its derivatives will be developed to be compliant with the USA's more stringent safety regulations.

That should help the company's sales and bottom line, but may see the new Elise increase in weight. Gales says that the new car will remain under the 1000kg mark.

Following on from Elise will be the Exige coupe. A new version of the Evora, which will be broadly based on the Elise/Exige, is pencilled in for 2022.

Until the launch of these all new models, Lotus will continue to refine its existing model range, and maintain interest in the brand via a steady stream of upgrades and special edition models.
