Although US President-elect Donald Trump will have to wait until January 2017 to be officially sworn in as America’s 45th President and move into the White House, American off-road enthusiasts can get their hands on the 2017 Ram Power Wagon later this year.

Priced from US$51,695, the 2017 Ram Power Wagon – dubbed the “most capable off-road truck in America” – is built on the same platform as the Ram 2500, and was seen in ‘Macho Power Wagon’-guise earlier this month at the 2016 SEMA show.

Highlighted by a new, black-accented front grille and tailgate, and new tire-tread-embossed seats with ‘Power Wagon’ embroidery, the truck also features “nostalgic graphics” that hark back to Macho Power Wagon designs of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Referring to one of your off-road trucks as being the “most capable” is a big call, however, to play it safe, Ram has fitted the Power Wagon with a 12,000-pound Warn winch, Bilstein mono-tube shocks, five-link rear coil spring suspension, an electronically-actuated disconnecting ‘Smart Bar’ sway bar, electric-locking front and rear differentials, 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac tyres, tow hooks, and extensive under-chassis ‘armour’.

With 305kW of power and 582Nm of torque coming from a 6.4-litre HEMI V8, plus the Power Wagon’s 363mm of ground clearance, 660mm of wheel travel, and 762mm-maximum water fording depth, the big ‘wags’ should really be able to go pretty much anywhere.

For those after a touch more refinement, there’s also a US$4495 Leather and Luxury option pack available, adding, among other things, a 10-speaker Alpine stereo, dual-zone climate control, heated and ventilated leather-trimmed front bench seats, a 10-way power-adjustable driver seat and six-way power-adjustable front passenger seat, a heated steering wheel, 60:40 split-folding rear seats with under-seat storage, front and rear parking sensors, and a rear-view camera.

Australia

Despite the local Ram range comprising the Laramie 2500 and Laramie 3500, the people behind importing, converting, and distributing Ram trucks locally say adding the 2017 Power Wagon to the Aussie line-up isn’t so straightforward.

“At the moment we have no immediate plans for this vehicle,” said Edward Rowe, media and public relations consultant for the Ateco Group of companies, which includes American Special Vehicles (ASV) – a joint venture with the Walkinshaw Group.

“Although it is based on the 2500 platform, due to it having different wheels and suspension, it would actually require separate homologation as a new model variant. So it’s not a simple, straight addition to the locally offered range.”

So, for now at least, it looks as though the Power Wagon will join the 2017 Ram 1500 Night on Ateco Group’s wish list.
