McLaren has confirmed that it will begin building a track-only McLaren P1 GTR after the final road-going P1 rolls down the production line.

With a singular focus and freed from the legislative requirements of road certification, the McLaren P1 GTR will feature almost every enhancement that McLaren can conjure up for improved track times.

Naturally there’s slick tyres for plenty of grip, as well as a wider track. Aggressive styling changes will also be made to improve both downforce and aerodynamic performance.

The petrol-electric hybrid drivetrain will be tweaked to produce 736kW or 1000 metric horsepower. That’s up significantly from the 673kW of power and 900Nm of torque offered by the road-going P1. In the road car there’s a 542kW/720Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 assisted by a 132kW/260Nm electric motor.

While the road-going P1 is quite an exclusive beast, with production limited to just 375 models, the P1 GTR will be in a class beyond thanks to the hefty asking price of 1.98 million pounds ($3.6 million).

In addition to the car, P1 buyers will be treated to a tailored driver training programme, including sessions with McLaren’s driver fitness team and use of the company’s racing simulators. McLaren will also organise no fewer than six driving events at Formula One circuits just for P1 GTR owners.

According to McLaren, the GTR name was chosen for the P1 track special in order to honour the 20th anniversary of the McLaren F1 GTR’s (above) victory at the Le Mans 24 Hour.
