Kia Rio turbo on the way

Korean giant Kia is expected to produce a turbocharged Kio Rio hot hatch to combat the Volkswagen Polo GTI.

Speaking with CarAdvice at the Geneva motor show, the company’s European head of powertrain development, Joachim Hahn, all but confirmed a turbocharged Rio was on the way.

“Yes we should look at turbo engines in Rio,” Hahn said. “We already produce turbocharged engines and what we will bring out in Kia within the next 12 months is a European turbocharged GDI engine”.

European markets are likely to get a turbocharged version of the Kia Cee’d before the Rio turbo arrives. Given the Cee’d is not destined for Australia and its equivalent, the Kia Cerato, will not be renewed until early 2013, the Rio hot hatch is likely to be Kia Australia’s first turbocharged sports model. It’s also likely to come standard with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

The engine in question is the 1.6-litre GDI turbo petrol which will be nearly identical to that found in the upcoming Hyundai Veloster Turbo. In Hyundai configuration it’s expected to produce 155kW of power and 265Nm of torque. We suspect the Rio turbo will get a slightly detuned version of the engine, but should still beat the 132kW offered by the Polo GTI’s 1.4-litre twin-charged engine.

With the Kia brand growing globally, the need for a performance model has become apparent to take the Korean giant to the next level. With sister company Hyundai expected to release the Veloster Turbo before year’s end (and potentially follow on with other performance models), it’s now just a matter of which Kia model will get a performance variant first.

In the running are the Rio, the next-generation Kia Cerato (with the Koup the likely contender) and the Optima. We believe the Rio will be first with a turbocharged engine in Australia, followed by the Cerato Koup and the Optima.

Given the 103KW Rio is slower than the 77KW Polo, the Rio turbo would need all of that 155KWs to match the 130KW Polo.

only a matter of gear ratios !

    • Gianni

Not really. A recent comparison tested the Rio at 8.7 and the Polo at 8.8

      • TJ

Yep, saw this same comparison. I think Kia are being very, very modest about their 0-100 times..

        • Blair Waldorf.

I have no idea why manufacturers are modest with their specs… i read a Prius (of all cars) does 0-100 in 9.7s yet toyota claims 10.5, i’ve read a Honda CR-Z has done 0-100 in 9 seconds unlike the 10 Honda claims. The new BMW 2.0 turbos are all under-rated power wise, as is the 110kw 1.4 turbo used by Fiat, apparently they’re closer to 120kw….

          • Gianni

It’s true! You are absolutely right. A Honda jazz vti manual. Claimed: 10.2 (Man). tested: 9.2. Skoda Fabia even! Same time as the polo. Claimed: 10.2+ Tested: 8.8. I don’t see how manufacturers get their times so different to comparisons.

          • Phil

Prius and CRZ times depend on the battery charge, if the batterys full you get extra electric motor power, if the battery is low, you won’t get any assistance – in fact the generator will be sucking power off the petrol motor.

The new BMW 2.0 turbos have extremely broad power and torque curve – constant torque peak from 1250-4800rpm and constant power peak from 5000-6500rpm & will easily outperform cars with a bigger but more “peaky” power delivery which is why the 180KW version is faster than the 190KW 3.0 6 it replaced.

but then you see the like of bugatti veyrons (basic model) and its claimed 0-100 @ 2.6seconds but real world figures push 3seconds as a mclaren f1 beats it off the line (0-100 in the f1 being claimed and proved @3.2 seconds)

      • Phil

Which sounds like the people who got those figures were going downhill.

Nonetheless, it still shows that the extra 25KWs in the Rio makes it just 0.1 secs quicker – so hypothetically if they want the Rio to get within 0.1 secs of the 130Kw Polo, they will also need about 25KW extra, which means it needs 155Kws as I originally said.

Very poor applied physics here mate

It’s actually true, Korean cars figures are terribly overrated.. A 200HP Korean car has the performance of a 170HP car or less..

Not to mention heir cars lack engine refinement and smoothness

      • bd

Uhm, no – Hyundai/Kia limit the torque delivered at lower RPMs to reduce torque steer with the “sweet spot” in power being at higher passing speeds for their FWD models (they also program the shifts to optimize fuel economy).

The 5.0 Genesis sedan gets the same 0-60 times as the BMW 550i and the pre-refresh V6 Genesis coupe has quicker 0-60 times than the V6 pony trio.

        • Infraboy

Tell me what’s faster, V6 Genesis or Lexus IS350 ?

        • Infraboy

Sorry dude, after some quick reasearch and some YouTube video, in what seems to be, the 3.8L V6 in the genesis does 0-100 in no less then 5.9 seconds..

Now that’s fast, but for what is a “high-end” engine, that is not top-tier.. The smaller 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 in Aurion does 0-100 in just over 6 seconds

          The 3.5L 2GR-FSE V6 in the Lexus IS350 does 0-100 in 4.9-5.5 seconds

          • Jae

Size difference – the genesis is a larger (and thus heavier) car compared to the is.

          • Jae

Plus… The top tier engine for the genesis is the v8 NOT the v6

  • marc

great news… Rio has an aspiration to become next small value car – turbo will be great addition… like the design better than VW

    • Joedha67

Me too. The Polo is like internet dating….the specfications look great but when you see them in the flesh you can’t help but feel disappointed.

  • Henry Toussaint

    Sounds nice!

The Polo looks very bland compared to the Rio.

  • daniel L

I have had my 7 speed DSG equipped POLO 77 tsi record a 0 – 100 time of 8.4 seconds. The 1.2 tsi is a fantastic engine. it has great pull down low and revs out very keenly.

  • darkone

ye gods, dont put  a turbo car out there without a proper manual gearbox!!!!! sports cars, hatch or coupe should have 3 pedals .end of story.

  • T123

can’t wait to see the sedan version of it.

  • 42 = The Answer

    I’m sold!

  • Tangelo

    First of all.
    KIA is Hyundai’s tagalong.
Not Korean Giant in Korea as a good mean.

  • SamM

Showed a picture of a new Rio to my male friends at uni and they all said “Yuck..Kia”.. Judging by that reaction I’d say this brand still has an image problem, despite the fact that they are making great cars now! Will this new performance version of the Rio change this image?
