Skoda Australia saw its most successful year in 2011 with sales up 112 percent to 3,501 units. The Volkswagen owned company expanded its Australian dealer network from 22 to 35 and brought in the Fabia light car and Yeti compact suv.
2012 will see much of the same story with at least ten more dealers appointed nationally, the reintroduction of a model and numerous additional variants. Skoda will also begin a larger branding campaign to establish itself as a better recognized car manufacturer.
Skoda Yeti – 4×4 112TSI
Vehicle type: Compact SUV. Timing: March
Skoda will fill the current Yeti model range gap between the 2WD petrol ($26,290) and 4×4 diesel ($37,990) with a 4×4 112kW petrol that will be priced somewhere in the middle.
Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo, Fabia RS, Fabia hatchback and wagon, Roomster returns
Vehicle type: Light car, hot hatch. Timing: May
May will see the expansion of the Fabia range to include the much anticipated Fabia RS, a wagon bodyshape as well as new hatchback variants. The Fabia RS, which is essentially a Polo GTI, will no doubt bring more buyers to the brand given the almost year-long waiting times for Volkswagen’s light hot hatch. We suspect it will be priced around the $26-27,000 mark.
Skoda will also bring back the Roomster wagon with a new pricing and positioning strategy that should see a much more competitive offering. Previously Skoda positioned the Roomster from a starting price of $25,990.
There are currently no plans to bring the Volkswagen Up! based Skoda Citigo to Australia in 2012.
