BMW M1 30th Anniversary Concept

By George Skentzos |

As a tribute to mark the 30th Anniversary of BMW’s first, last, and only mid-engined sports car, BMW has showcased a modern interpretation of the iconic M1 at the Concorso d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este.

Despite its deceptively artificial hues and proportions, the M1 concept actually exists as a rolling shell, purely as a design exercise to pay homage to the original M1.

The original M1 served as the platform with which BMW launched its iconic M-Series, which today remain as arguably the world’s greatest race-bred saloons.

Built to compete against the Porsche 911 which dominated racing at the time, the M1 itself was a complete disaster as James May explains.

    OMG!

  • smokin’R32

Does seem like BMW needs a supercar to go up against Audis R8 and the Mercedes SLR. Not to mention the slew of new japanese supercars (GTR, LF-A, NSX, Supra). Hopefully something comes of this, and its better executed than the original..

Gee we agree on something again R32………BMW have got a Supercar in the pipeline, not due till 2012 though but is aimed at Porsche 911T GT2,Audis R8 and Mercs Mclaren.

Rumour is it will be twin-turbo V10 {M5 power plant} !With an estimated 625HP,with a cost of around 300,000 Euros, and I bet you can still option it up from that, hahaha

Its not going to look like this though, thank god! Cant find a panel that looks good, and those wheels…….

  • Golfschwein

It’s certainly in the spirit of the original, right down to the wheels the Missile doesn’t like.

Groovy! Have a good weekend, Bavarian Missile? Mine was most satisfying! :)

Thats not a real car it a Howheels thing. Pity it all went wrong with the M1, James May seems to have rated it quite highly but then he is a bit ‘off-stream’.

The M1 looked ugly before, and it still looks ugly.

Back in late 70′s I owned a BMW M1 two-seater sport car. It was a superb machine with a well advanced design. I have not seen a picture of this car since. I know that BMW withdrew it from the market after a very short period. I unfortunately sold the car to an American friend (GI) who was stationed in Frankfurt. I lost contact… Can anyone find details and pictures of this car…. Thanks.
