2012 Holden Colorado revealed ahead of Bangkok premiere

By Tim Beissmann |

The 2012 Holden Colorado has been previewed in detail ahead of the unveiling of the Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck at this week’s Bangkok International Motor Show.

Although the vehicle at Thailand is just a show car, the production version of the Colorado will go on sale in Thailand later this year. Australian sales of the rebadged Holden Colorado are expected to commence early in 2012.

The Colorado Show Truck features an extended-cab body with small rear suicide doors to improve access behind the seats.

The 20-inch liquid-metal aluminium wheels, off-road tyres, and bold grille and front and rear lights give the Colorado an imposing and capable appearance.

The streamlined “cab-collar” design that flows into the hard body-colour tonneau cover gives the ute a more complete, car-like stance.

Chevrolet says the Colorado’s new 2.8-litre diesel engine will be powerful, efficient, and produce a broad torque band perfect for towing.

The interior has a refined appearance, with wraparound features integrating the dashboard and centre console with the rest of the cabin.

Chevrolet says the materials and surfaces inside the Colorado are more like an expensive European passenger car, with ‘double-faced’ leather, ice-blue lighting, three-dimensional instrument gauges, dark wood trim, chrome highlights and soft-touch dashboard plastics.

Also included is a dual-zone climate control system and an infotainment system with seven-inch display, internet connectivity, satellite navigation, audio functions and hands-free phone features.

Chevrolet says the Colorado Show Truck still does all the things a mid-sized pick-up needs to, with a number of storage compartments, including a large, dual glovebox.

Exactly how many of these features will make it to the production model is still to be finalised, according to General Motors global vehicle line executive, Brad Merkel.

“Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market,” Mr Merkel said.

“It reflects a stylised version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs.”

More details of the production model will be released towards the end of this year.

If this was the production model, it would be one of the first utes I’d be like OMG to. The VE ute is probably the only other ute I think is even mildly desirable. If this went to production as if, I think Holden would be unstoppable in that market. It’s a shame they’ll dumb it down though. FIngers crossed it’ll looked at least half as good as it does here. Well done Chevy!

  • Torque

Well done, it looks good. It should be given a more patriotic name when sold in Australia. I realise it is not made here but Colorado? it may as well be called Campbelltown ;)

    • Hansome_AL

Agree, should renamed it into Kokoda..

    • http://mazda bangel

Its namesake in the clothing game is about to go west , so might be time to change it , i like campbelltown too , or belmont or kingswood to remind us of the horrors of the 70′s .

  • Jaycee

Looks awesome! Will be interesting to see the production version

  • Doctor

No mention of the engine. I’ve heard rumours that it’ll be a 2.8l (diesel) derived from a VM Motori design. Anyone heard otherwise, and what about the petrol version/s?

    • RS5 II

Did you read the artical or just look at the pictures?

Hope your not my doctor- been reading long?

      • Doctor

Oh about 100 years – missed 3 lines between the pictures :-)
Don’t worry I’ve stopped practising (never got it right anyway) and got too old to bury my mistakes!

  • Golfschwein

Wow, that looks tremendous, even allowing for a tradesmans’s version in white with steel wheels. It’s all in the proportions, y’see. The current top seller in the segment has awful proportions, and proportions are a simple matter of moving things up, down, left, right, smaller or bigger to make the difference between beauty and ugliness. A bit like a human’s face!

I like this more than Amorok and the new Ranger and I’ll make a prediction that the only thing not to make the show room will be the mirrors on stilts. The rest of it looks 100% ready.

    • pezza

unlikely – still needs to be price competitive.

      • Golfschwein

Oh, sure, but there’s no reason the version here can’t be sold at top whack. What do people pay for these things – high thirties, mid forties? Thereabouts, whatever.

After that, it’s a simple matter of deleting: delete the twenty inch wheels and show tyres, delete the wood, leather, touch screen, 3D gauges, fancy headlights (although, even they could go as is on a highline model), leccy windows and whatever else you need to make a $27,990 special. The majority of what you see here is designed in and ready to go.

        • pezza

well i’m not familiar with Colorado, but I know someone who bought a wildtrak and he said was close to $60k on the road. This is in a current model with leather, remote shutting tonneau etc…… not woodgrain, soft touch plastics, lcd’s, 18 inch not 20 inch wheels etc etc.

I know is a bit of a stretch comparing a completely different model to Holdens pricing structure. But with all those features in a 4wd I would imagine it would be well and truly over 60k.

All speculative, but yeah…..will wait and see

  • Valet Dabess

damn that interior looks so futuristic

  • Crossy

Lookin good. Can’t get here soon enough.
Makes the current Colorado look like a steam engine.

  • TMG

What a good looking ute, the interior will probably be only available on the Nissan pathfinder, Mitz Challanger, Ford Everest version, but good to see some real comp from Holden in this segment, lets hope the Aussie market gets all models.

  • PoisonEagle

Exterior is not class leading (or even remarkable), but interior might be. I love the font and backlight on the displays.

  • Duckula

Wonder if I can shoehorn that awesome looking stereo into my Barina dashboard…

  • JD

the colour of the car is similar to that of the one Ford used to reveal their new Territory

  • john

I’m interested in this. Shame it won’t look like this when it goes on sale down here.

Wow great looking ute!! I have to say i think this looks nicer than the new BT50, Ranger and Amarok! Very nice proportions. Although im not the biggest fan of the interior.

Click my name for a look at what the dual cab version would probably look like.

    • Joof

      Nice Renderings Baji…

  • sven

Can anyone comment if this shape will be used for the Isuzu D-max? There has been rumors on other sites.

    • jeffro bo dingo

from i understand the 2 wont look anything alike but they may still share the chassis and that is it, the engines wont be the same this colorado will no longer be a rebadged isuzu.

  • Able

The front looks nice but the back is very reminiscent of the current Chevy Silverado in the US. The interior is nice though and I hope it isn’t toned down too much for production. Having said that, I’m not going to cancel my Amarok just yet…

  • Jon

Where does the Ad Blue go in…..

  • Geoff Spackman

This beast looks the goods and if it’s as good as the current model…it’ll be a winner !!!!

  • annette

PLEASE HOLDEN make this ute in a V6 space cab manual 2WD & I will be the first buyer. Desperately need a new ute but current Colorado is so ugly & no one else makes exactly what I want. Car makers take note – not everyone wants diesel & I wouldn’t drive one if it was free.

  • Pos

Nice show ute. Dare I say it looks a tad bit better than my V6 Navara. The only way Ill trade in for an upgrade though is if Holden bring out this new model with my grunt than my current Navara. So its gotta have over 200kw. Id really like to see the V8 motor from a holden VE slammed into one of these & Id be sold. Holden please please please make it happen… doubt it

  • Booferoo

    Suicide doors tickled my fancy.

  • G Zanatta

wheres the 4 door version for families to fit. I’m a tradie and want the use of both ute and family in the 1 truck. GZ
