Medium Passenger Segment – say it out loud and even the name of the segment is boring. It’s enough to put the genuine motoring enthusiast into a deep slumber. Don’t believe me? Have a listen to the following luminaries… Honda Accord, Hyundai i40, Nissan Altima, Peugeot 508, Renault Latitude, Subaru Liberty, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Jetta. Are your pulses racing? No, didn’t think so.
Once upon a time, this segment was one of the most hotly contested in Australia. Not so much anymore. Fortunately though, there’s at least one medium sedan with a bit of attitude…
The Mazda 6 sedan, along with the Kia Optima strangely enough, remains a style icon and a standout choice in the segment. Both Mazda and Kia have injected some style into an otherwise very bland corner of the Australian new car market.
How interesting then that the most boring segment – this one – is dominated by the most boring car within that segment – the Toyota Camry, which holds a whopping 54 percent of the market.
