Tesla completes site preparations for Berlin gigafactory

MORE: All COVID-19 coverage here US electric car specialist Tesla appears to have completed site preparations for its Berlin ‘gigafactory’ production facility, according to a new video. Aerial drone footage captured by YouTuber ‘Tesla Kid Grünheide’ (video at bottom of story), shows cleared land and access roads carved out of the 300 hectare site just outside Berlin. Industrial ‘pile drivers’ are also visible on-site, suggesting that preparation of building foundations may commence soon.

Tesla buys land for first Chinese factory

Tesla has announced the purchase of 860,000 square metres of land from the Shanghai government for a new Gigafactory. The news was revealed on the QQ social network overnight. According to land transaction records dug up by the Yuan Talks website, the plot of land cost 973 million yuan ($199 million). From earlier reports, the new factory has an estimated cost of around US$2 billion, which Tesla intends to raise in Asian debt markets.

Tesla, Panasonic join forces to make battery Gigafactory a reality - report

Panasonic and Tesla have signed a partnership agreement to jointly build a massive new factory for lithium-ion batteries, dubbed the Gigafactory, in the US. Japanese newspaper Nikkei is reporting that the two have agreed in principle to an arrangement where Tesla will be responsible for the land and buildings, while Panasonic will provide the machinery required to produce lithium-ion battery cells en masse.
