Are electric vehicle owners getting a free ride on Australian roads?

As Australia wakes to the global wave of electrification in transport, there’s a lot to look forward to. Whether paying less for transport, cleaning the air we breathe, reducing our dependence on imported oil or creating innovative new businesses and jobs in the future of mobility. But occasionally, I see the debate tied up in the doom and gloom of the challenges we’ll face to get there. One of these concerns is how we will pay for our roads, since EVs don’t pay fuel excise.

Electric vehicles: Federal 'plan about a plan' slammed by EV Council

Prime Minister Scott Morrison today unveiled a $2 billion pre-election climate change policy, but electric vehicle advocates are calling for more to be done in support of the burgeoning EV market. There's minimal mention of electric vehicles in the policy, which simply commits to developing a 'National Electric Vehicle Strategy' without any concrete promise what it might look like and when it might be done.

Senate Committee to investigate potential for local EV manufacturing

A new Committee on Electric Vehicles has been formed in the Australian Senate, with the goal of lending "much needed momentum and leadership" to the push for electric cars Down Under. Headed by Tim Storer, Independent Senator for South Australia, the committee will explore the "economic, environmental and social benefits" widespread adoption of electric vehicles could offer for Australia.
