1997 Daewoo Nubira review: Used car guide
The Nubira was one of three cars launched in Australia by Daewoo in 1997 as the ambitious Korean company ramped up its global ambitions.
Replacing the ancient Espero, the Nubira was initially available as the SX sedan and "Eurowagon", powered by a 1.6-litre twin-camshaft four-cylinder engine producing 78 kW.
Nubira was bigger inside than most competitors and, at $20,000 (with the five-speed manual transmission), offered good value. An added incentive was Free Care, valued at $2500, which covered dealer delivery costs and service costs for a few years, and proved to be a strong selling point.
However, air-conditioning, a four-speed auto and a safety pack (dual airbags and anti-lock brakes) were each $2000 options.
In May 1998 came the CDX sedan and wagon fitted with the Holden-built Family II four-cylinder engine that produced 98 kW. Priced from $22,000, it meant Nubira was now of interest to both small and medium-car buyers.
A hatchback was launched at the same time, but that only lasted a couple of years.
More than 21,000 Daewoos were sold here in both 1998 and 1999, but speculation over the company's global future triggered a sales fall. By the time Holden took over local sales in December 2002, only the Nubira CDX sedan and wagon were still offered. The Lacetti sedan took over in May 2003. But Nubira's departure signalled that of the brand, which ceased trading in Australia at the end of last year.
Our pick
With its commodious interior and punchy 2.0-litre engine, the 2000 CDX is a medium car for the budget buyer.
