She says, he says: Mazda6 Touring wagon

It’s hard to argue with Mazda’s new Touring Wagon. Those lean, slightly menacing lines, a snout that means business, great power, loads of mod cons and terrific fuel figures. What are your thoughts, Sam?
He
On paper, there’s a lot to get excited about with Mazda’s latest wagon. The 2.2-litre diesel engine is thrifty and efficient and the steering and handling package is typically Mazda-good. But I wasn’t completely convinced by its internal space as a family hauler. Is it roomy enough for mum, dad and the entire gang?
She
Like the majority of five seaters it has a hard, narrow, no doubt unpopular middle seat - so I think ‘‘the gang’’ would have to be a traditional nuclear family Sam. It baffles me that no one gets the middle seat right. The rear storage isn’t great either, but for those upfront it’s comfy, leathery and jammed packed with gadgets. How do you rate the driver aids?
He
The wagon is undoubtedly tailored for European tastes, hence the tighter proportions, but one redeeming feature of the shorter wheelbase is a more responsive driving character. The driver aids are pretty impressive for a car of this price; I particularly liked the radar cruise control and forward obstruction warning functions. The automatic high beam function, which switches off for oncoming motorists, is a neat feature as well - though I did find it a bit temperamental when there were overhead reflections.
She
The Mazda6 is very even-tempered in its handling though - it’s rarely unsettled. And so handsome! For the first time I like burgundy in a car - that metallic cola-coloured piano gloss trim is a bit special, especially with red top stitch. As an all-round good thing you’d have to rate the 6 wagon right up there, wouldn’t you?
He
The 6 wagon is a worthy option for anyone in the market for a family hauler; even - dare I say it - prospective SUV buyers. I found the ride comfort excellent on all but the harshest of surfaces. This car isn’t aimed at sporty drivers but it does offer a commendable chassis and dynamics package for everyday driving. The six-speed auto and electronic stability control system work well too. I’m fairly convinced. You, Sal?
She
I’ve already recommended it to my sister. The safety kit, fuel economy, power and resale value will suit her and the toddlers for the next few years. Anyone with older kids however will want more room and possibly an extra row.
He
And when you consider the 6 is loaded with a Bose stereo, power seats, front and rear parking sensors, reversing camera and push button start - plus an ultra economical diesel engine - it’s likely to stay relevant in the new car market for some time yet.
