2006 Nissan Pathfinder ST-L review: Quick drive
Despite the cost of petrol, many people still prefer four-wheel-drives for their combination of passenger space, towing capacity and off-road ability.
The Pathfinder is one of the best-value medium-sized SUVs, combining a standard seven-seat interior with an impressive 4.0-litre V6 petrol engine and an off-road-friendly ladder-type chassis.
The V6 produces a prodigious 198 kW and 385 Nm. Mated to a five-speed automatic transmission, it moves the Pathfinder's hefty 2.2-tonne kerb weight along impressively.
The downside is fuel consumption, with the V6's claimed use a wallet-squeezing 13.5 L/100 km. There is a more frugal four-cylinder turbo-diesel option for the Pathfinder that is worth considering.
Based on a traditional ladder-frame chassis, the Pathfinder trades some smoothness on rough roads for the ability to climb and descend most off-road challenges.
The ST-L's standard equipment list includes dual airbags, stability control, ABS with EBD and brake assist, 17-inch alloy wheels, roof rails, side steps, dual-zone climate control, six-CD audio and cruise control.
Price: From $51,990.
