2006 Mercedes-Benz S500L review: Quick drive
The W221 generation S-Class arrived this year, so it's no surprise that sales have skyrocketed.
Sales up 179.4 per cent
At the heart of the range is the S500L, the long-wheelbase version powered by a new 5.5-litre V8 that produces 285 kW and 530 Nm.
It is big and tough enough to cope with a substantial 1985 kg kerb weight, supported by Benz's excellent 7G-Tronic automatic transmission.
Naturally, the weight fights back when it comes to dynamics. The S500L's suspension crashes and the steering rack rattles in an unsophisticated way in rough corners.
Better to back off a tad and allow the S500L to quietly and comfortably waft its occupants to their destination. It really can be a privileged place to be.
Dark burr walnut wood trim, quality leather and wonderful seating help emphasise that.
Being German, the S-Class comes with a mouse-type controller. But unlike some other attempts at this technology, Benz's command system doesn't frustrate too much by avoiding over-complication.
Price: From $269,000
