2006 Chrysler 300C SRT8 – Quick drive review
As with the Caprice, the big Chrysler is aimed at a sports rather than typical luxury buyer. It is powered by a 6.1-litre version of Chrysler's Hemi V8, which delivers 317 kW and 568 Nm via a five-speed automatic gearbox.
The performance potential is huge, with ground-shaking power delivered from standstill. Well-tuned traction and stability control, strong brakes and ABS help the massive 20-inch Goodyear rubber keep everything under control.
All that comes at a cost at the fuel bowser. Chrysler claims a fuel consumption rate of 14.0 L/100 km but that's hard to achieve if you want to consistently tap the engine's ability.
The standard 5.7-litre V8 300C has a fuel-saving Multiple Displacement System, but is incompatible with the SRT8's engine. The SRT8 has eye-catching exterior styling: blocky, strong and American. But the interior doesn't quite have the same impact.
The SRT8 is very good value, with the full complement of airbags, climate control, cruise control, six-CD audio, leather trim, and park distance control.
