2006 Saab 9-3 Convertible 20th Anniversary review: Quick drive
Through trial and tribulation, the 9-3 Convertible has shown itself as a shining light for Saab's sales.
The Swedish car maker claims it is the most popular premium four-seat convertible sold in Australia, with more than 10,000 sold since its launch 19 years ago as the 900 Turbo.
The car first went on sale in the US in 1986, so to celebrate the anniversary Saab has announced a limited-edition 9-3 rag-top based on the entry-level Linear model. Added standard features include five-speed automatic transmission, 17-inch alloy wheels, park assist, six-CD audio and body-coloured roof-tonneau cover and door handles.
The Anniversary uses the same low-pressure turbocharged version of Saab's 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine as the Linear.
It produces 110 kW, but the big asset is 240 Nm of torque at 2000rpm. When combined with the five-speed auto, the 9-3 is - well - linear in its progression. It's not quick, but it is calm.
This latest-generation 9-3 convertible (introduced in 2003) is also a significant step forward from its shaky predecessor in terms of ride and handling.
