I think it is sluggish, especially when taking off. The rest I recommend. It handles very well, with plenty of space inside the cabin.
This is my second VW, and the first one was a 2.0-litre turbo diesel I loved. But the dream was always the R, so my wife bought me one. But coming from other sports cars, my personal opinion is it should have more power.
Its technology needs a few improvements, such as wireless apps so you don’t need to connect through USB and use cables, which is the past. With today’s technology, I think VW can do much better.
But I love the Golf R‘s perfect size. I’ve only done 11,000km and I love every moment driving it. The DSG is very good, and so far I’ve not had any problems with it. It should have a 2.5-litre turbo engine, because the car can handle it with its all-wheel drive, and it would make it a better and more efficient vehicle.
But saying that, there should be only one R, and not the R-Line. People buy the R because of the fame of the R32 and the continuation of such Rs. When people buy the R, they buy the R and not the Passat R-Line or others. And you pay for the R, so as a customer you want to have the R match the original shape you always dreamt of.
I bought the car thinking it was the only R, but just after that came the R-Line. That left me a little disappointed. So before you buy, make sure they don’t come with many other models because the vehicle’s value is reduced, which is what’s happening with VW and the R.
Every car has its positives and negatives, and the Golf R is mostly positives, so I recommend you give it a test drive. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I do. I bought the car without doing a test drive, but please don’t do that. Give it a drive and see if it’s what you want before you buy.
The dealer I purchased the car from didn’t have any Rs, but just the love I have for it made me order one. So, I traded the diesel for the R. Of course, you feel the difference between the diesel and petrol, but compared to other sports cars I’ve owned, I think the R is a little sluggish. I don’t know if it’s only mine or are other people’s the same? The rest is all good.
A few things should be better, but nothing is 100 per cent perfect. It is a very good and pleasant vehicle to drive. But that’s just my experience and opinion, so please see for yourself. The Golf R is a lovely car.
