The brilliantly smooth and refined turbo straight 6 produces a commendable 400Nm available from just 1300rpm and it keeps pulling to redline. It rides quite firm, but isn't ever uncomfortable. The steering is well weighted and turn in is direct and precise. Left to its own devices it makes a wonderful cruiser, especially with the top down, but push the shifter across into sport mode and it really livens up into a more edgy sports car - the exhaust note is more noticeable and it hangs onto gears longer. The paddle shifters are annoying and both act the same way, whereby you push forward with your thumbs to down shift or pull back to up-shift.
Interior is made up of typical leather and high quality plastics that are soft to touch, however the silver trim in particular is quite hard and not quite up to the same standard as the 3. The design is otherwise aesthetically pleasing and well laid out. Pretty much everything is accessed through the iDrive computer which was easier to learn than some would have you believe.
Its exterior design is better than the hatch and the black paint and the optional M-Sport package really set it off. The rear seats are actually usable by adults, amazingly, and not bad for most trips. I am just about 6'1" and my head touches the roof when sitting straight, but is fine if leaning forward slightly. The knee leaning against the central compartment backing does tend to ache though.
Overall a very impressive vehicle that is stacks of fun to drive and doesn't disappoint.
