Young male drivers fuel the stereotype: Busted at epic speeds, plates seized, hit with massive fines

Summer is not even here yet but young drivers have already been busted at epic speeds more than twice the limit.

Novice drivers are doing themselves no favours – and putting other motorists at risk – after being clocked at epic speeds on NSW roads over the past week.

A number of P-plate drivers and motorists in their early 20s have been busted at more than twice the speed limit – in some cases while under the effects of drugs.

In the early hours of Saturday morning last weekend police officers attached to Parramatta's highway patrol division detected an Audi S3 (pictured below) travelling at 144km/h in a sign posted 70km/h area on the Cumberland Highway, Constitution Hill.

The 23-year-old male driver also returned a positive roadside test to cannabis and was arrested for the purpose of a secondary drug test, police said.

The driver was issued with a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h, fined six demerit points and issued a $2794 ticket.

"The driver’s licence was also suspended immediately for a period of six months," police said on a social media post.

"Police will await the laboratory results of the oral fluid test prior to any further action regarding driving with a prescribed illicit drug present."

Meanwhile, on Wednesday of this week a P-plate driver of a Volkswagen Golf GTI hot hatch (pictured above, and at the top of this story) was detected travelling at 146km/h in a 70km/h zone.

"When asked to produce his licence, the 19-year-old male produced a NSW Provisional P2 Licence," police reported on social media.

"The male driver had his licence suspended on the spot for a minimum period of six months, his (vehicle) registration was cancelled for a period of three months, and his (vehicle) plates were seized and returned to (roads authorities)."

Late this week a 23-year-old male driving a 2005 Holden Commodore (pictured above) was detected at 177km/h in a 100km/h in a remote stretch of highway near Griffith in central-west NSW.

"Police stopped the vehicle to find that the driver, a 23-year-old male, held a NSW driver provisional P2 licence (Green P). When asked why he was driving so fast he replied, 'It was stupid'," police reported on social media.

"The driver was issued with a penalty notice for 'P2 driver exceed speed limit by more than 45km/h'. His driver licence was immediately suspended for six months and sanctions were applied to the vehicle's registration for three months."

And in an example demonstrating police can catch speeders anywhere, anytime, a NSW Police highway patrol motorcyclist equipped with a mobile radar stopped a speeding Volkswagen Golf – also driven by a P-plater, pictured above – which had been clocked at 170km/h in a 110km/h zone.

However, a 'red' P1 provisional licence limits drivers to a top speed of 90km/h.

"The 18-year-old driver produced a P1 provisional licence ... when spoken to (the driver) told police, 'I don't know why I was doing that'," officers reported on social media.

"The driver was issued with a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h ($2794). His licence was suspended on the spot for a period of six months."
