2024 Volvo XC60 Black Edition and S60 Black Edition plug-in hybrid prices announced

New versions of the XC60 SUV and S60 sedan add blacked-out looks – and mark the return of plug-in hybrid power to Volvo's sole remaining four-door.

Volvo Australia has announced limited-run Black Edition versions of its XC60 SUV and S60 sedan due in April 2024, with the S60 offering a more potent plug-in hybrid drivetrain for the first time in nearly three years.

A limited run of 65 S60 Recharged Black Editions and 150 XC60 Black Editions will arrive in Australian showrooms offered exclusively with the Swedish car maker’s ‘T8’ plug-in hybrid powertrain.

The S60 Black Edition is the first plug-in S60 offered in Australia in more than two years after the sedan’s line-up was pared back to a single mild-hybrid model in mid-2021.

Both the S60 and XC60 Recharge Black Editions will feature all-wheel drive, with power from two electric motors teamed with a twin-turbo petrol four-cylinder engine – already standard in the XC60 Ultimate T8 – making a claimed 335kW/709Nm.

The powertrain gives the S60 Black Edition a claimed 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.5 seconds and an official combined fuel economy figure of 1.4L/100km in lab testing, with up to 90km of electric driving range.

The XC60 Black Edition can travel up to 76km on battery power alone and has a 4.8-second 0-100km/h time with a 1.6L/100km claimed combined fuel efficiency figure.

The Black Edition treatment sees Onyx Black exterior paintwork, blacked-out window surrounds and high-gloss black alloy wheels for both vehicles.

The XC60 Black Edition rides on double-spoke 21-inch wheels while the S60 Black Edition features 19-inch alloys.

The theme carries over to the inside of both Black Editions, with charcoal seats trimmed in a mix of Nappa leather and textile materials, making the Orrefors crystal gear lever stand out.

There are also silver metal mesh aluminium details extending to the silver door handles and centre console cover in both special-edition cars.

Both Black Editions will include a Bowers & Wilkins audio system, panoramic sunroof, heated front seats and steering wheel, head-up display, tailored instrument panel and integrated Google services for the infotainment screens.

Standard safety technology includes adaptive cruise control and lane centring assist.

The XC60 Black Edition also includes air suspension with Four-C Active Chassis control and is priced at $2000 more than the Ultimate T8 version, making it $103,990 before on-road costs.

The S60 Recharge Black Edition is $88,990 before on-road costs – a rise over the S60 T8 R-Design previously last sold in Australia in 2021 with a list price of $84,990.

Volvo Australia is aiming to become an electric-only brand by 2026 –ahead of Volvo Car’s own global goal of achieving the same feat by 2030.

The Australian arm scaled back the number of petrol-powered cars in its line-up in late 2023, having axed diesel models in 2021 – again, well ahead of Volvo manufacturing its last diesel passenger vehicle in March 2024.
