Volvo XC40 T3 launches in the UK, here in late-2019
The first three-cylinder engine from Volvo debuts in small crossover.
The Volvo XC40 T3 is now on sale in the UK and Europe, marking the first time the Swedish brand has offered a three-cylinder engine in its line-up.
Serving as a new entry point into the XC40 range, the T3 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbo three-pot petrol making 116kW of power (@5000rpm) and 265Nm of torque (@1850-3850rpm).
Drive is sent to the front wheels exclusively via a six-speed manual transmission for the time being, though Volvo has confirmed an eight-speed automatic will be "introduced at a later date".
The company claims the T3-equipped XC40 can complete the 0-100 sprint in 9.4 seconds, and tow up to 1.6 tonnes with a braked trailer.
Volvo's UK and European divisions also released the T4 and D3 powertrains for the XC40 this week, both equipped with 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engines.
The T4 gets a 140kW petrol engine and all-wheel drive mated as standard to an eight-speed automatic, while the D3 features a 112kW diesel offering the choice of front- and all-wheel drive, along with manual and automatic transmissions.

Volvo's local arm told CarAdvice in March that the T3 is a likely starter for the second half of 2019 once the automatic transmission becomes available. We've reached out for an update.
Meanwhile, the T4 will head Down Under later this year, also debuting the high-spec Inscription trim level for the XC40.
