Trademark reveals local plans for high-performance Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – UPDATE: Hear the Z06

A new flagship Corvette Z06 could be offered by General Motors Special Vehicles in Australia, according to a new trademark.

UPDATE, 20 July 2021: Chevrolet has shared a teaser video of the Corvette Z06 across its social media accounts overnight.

The video highlights the engine in the high-performance Corvette, which is widely-reported to feature a flat-plane crank, producing a high-pitched engine note reminiscent of Italian exotics, rather than a traditional V8 rumble.

While earlier reports suggested the reveal date had been pushed back to next year, Chevrolet has confirmed the model will be officially unveiled during autumn in the US – 22 September to 21 December 2021 inclusive – indicating the vehicle could go on sale sooner than 2023.

19 July 2021: GMSV may be lining up the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 for Australian buyers, if trademark filings are any indication.

The trademark documents, submitted on 13 July 2021 and uncovered by CarsGuide, gives weight to the possibility of the high-performance Corvette being made for the Australian market by Chevrolet and being sold through the GMSV dealer network – the General Motors subsidiary formed from the ashes of HSV.

However, those keen on a Corvette Z06 may have to wait a while, with website GM Authority reporting delays to the model pushing back its reveal to late 2022, for a 2023 launch in the US.

Given the C8 Corvette has yet to land in Australia – with its arrival expected in late 2021 or early 2022 – it's possible local buyers could be waiting for the Z06 until 2024 for the Z06.

A number of US media outlets are reporting the Z06 will get a 5.5-litre non-turbo 'LT6' V8, producing up to 460kW and 745Nm thanks to its 32-valve double overhead cam design and flat-plane crank – potentially delivering a sound more akin to an Italian supercar than an American muscle car.

For the time being though, local buyers will get the Corvette with a 6.2-litre naturally-aspirated V8 producing as much as 369kW and 637Nm in Carbon Edition specification, powering the rear wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Given the 2022 Chevrolet Corvette is priced from $144,990 plus on-road costs to $189,990 plus on-road costs depending on specification, it's likely the Z06 will be in excess of $200,000 locally – slotting in between the recently-unveiled Lotus Emira V6, and the upcoming V6 supercars from McLaren and Ferrari.
