‘FJ’ name could live on in Toyota LandCruiser line-up – report

Toyota has filed a trademark for the 'LandCruiser FJ' name, suggesting a future off-roader could be given the iconic name.

Spotted by a user on the LandCruiserForum website, the LandCruiser FJ trademark application appears to be protecting a future model, rather than a previous vehicle – given the last Toyota model to wear the moniker was called the FJ Cruiser.

The FJ name is a throwback to the first petrol-powered LandCruiser produced by the Japanese car maker – an iteration of the diesel-powered BJ version – with the tradition continuing up to the 80 Series of the 1990s.

Toyota looks to be actively expanding its LandCruiser line-up, after unveiling its Electric LandCruiser Concept at the Tokyo motor show in recent weeks.

A smaller off-road concept – which may launch as a rival to the wildly popular Suzuki Jimny – has been rumoured to be called the LandCruiser Mini, the Yaris Cruiser, or the Lite Cruiser.

The concept takes a number of design cues from the boxy FJ Cruiser – sold in Australia between 2011 and 2016.

Toyota isn't known for trademarking names purely for protection. Historically, names filed as trademarks mean there is a model being planned for the name that is just around the corner.
