Toyota Corolla Hybrid pricing revealed
Japanese brand launches new hybrid small car.
Toyota has added a dedicated hybrid model to its popular Corolla small car range, which gives customers a cheaper entry-point to hybrid motoring compared to the Japanese brand's Prius.
Offered in a single specification level the Corolla Hybrid hatch is priced from $26,990 plus on-road costs, which places it between the petrol-powered SR and range-topping ZR hatches.
Standard features include 16-inch alloy wheels, fabric upholstery, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, bi-LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, keyless entry and ignition, in-built satellite navigation and a 4.2-inch digital instrument display.
The Corolla Hybrid also gets a range of standard safety equipment which includes seven airbags, reversing camera, stability and traction control and ABS.
Powered by a combination of a 1.8-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that is good for 73kW and 142Nm and a 60kW electric motor, the Corolla Hybrid generates a combined power output of 100kW. Like the Prius, it is also paired to a CVT transmission that drives the front wheels.
The Corolla Hybrid can work in both petrol and electric only mode for short periods of travel or with a combination of both.
However, like the Prius, the Corolla Hybrid still uses an older Nickel-metal Hydride battery instead of the more contemporary lithium ion batteries.
Toyota claims that the new Corolla Hybrid will offer class leading fuel efficiency with claimed combined fuel use of 4.1L/100km, which compares favourably to the 6.1L/100km of the petrol only Corolla.
The Corolla Hybrid will be the Japanese brand's fifth hybrid model in its Australian line-up joining the three Prius models and the locally built Camry hybrid.
