Toyota Australia has reached its millionth vehicle export this month, the first of Australia's three car manufacturers to reach such a milestone.
It has taken 26 years to reach this figure, with Toyota Australia first exporting the Corona model to New Zealand in 1986.
Toyota Australia currently exports the Camry and Aurion models, its global reach expanding to include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and the South Pacific Islands.
Significantly, it took 20 years to reach the 500,000 exports mark in 2006, but just six more years to double this figure.
The carmaker's peak annual exports were achieved in 2008, with a total of 101,668 vehicles shipped overseas that year.
Since then, figures have dipped to 80,000 in 2010 and 59,943 in 2011, but look set to top 70,000 in 2012, based on year-to-date results.
Domestic sales of Aurion and Camry models also show a net increase so far in 2012, though Camry’s 23.8 percent improvement is offset by a 9.1 percent drop in Aurion sales.
"Although the automotive industry is facing challenges in Australia, it is important that we continue to focus on our export program and explore new export opportunities", Toyota Australia’s Chris Harrod said.
