Tesla introduces ‘Ludicrous Mode’ to Model S

American brand upgrades Model S with more performance and increased range.

Electric car maker Tesla has announced upgrades to its Model S sedan with the option of a longer range and more performance thanks to a 'Ludicrous Mode'.

Replacing the 'Insane Mode' already found in the top-of-the-range P85D, Tesla claims the new settings can cut its acceleration time by 10 per cent.

That should slash the 0-100km/h sprint for the P85D to 3.0seconds (from 3.3secs) and a quarter mile time of 10.9seconds.

But this extra performance won't come cheap with the optional speed upgrade costing $13,500.

In a blog release announcing the changes, Tesla's charismatic CEO Elon Musk promised things can get even faster, but he is saving the increased performance for the next generation Roadster which is due in four years time.

In a reference to the 1987 sci-fi comedy film Spaceballs Musk claimed the next step above 'Ludicrous Mode' will be "maximum plaid", the fastest speed the spaceship can travel.

For owners looking for more range Tesla's other new upgrade is an improvement to the battery than can add a further 24km.

This is available on all models across the range - 70, 70D, 85, 85D and P85D - giving a maximum range of 482km on the top model.

But Musk isn't asking owners rush out and buy it.

"Existing owners can also purchase the pack upgrade, but I wouldn't recommend doing so unless your usage is on the edge of current range," Musk said in his blog.

"On average, we expect to increase pack capacity by roughly five per cent per year. Better to wait until you have more time on your existing pack and there is a larger accumulated pack energy difference."

Musk also used the announcement to give an update on the long-awaited Model X SUV and forthcoming smaller, cheaper Model 3 additions to the range.

"First, I should address something that might be on your mind, like: 'Where the heck is the Model X and the Model 3?! You should really get on that.' Don't worry, those remain our focus and good progress is being made on both. X is on track for first [US] deliveries in two months and Model 3 in just over two years."

Model X is set to be available Australia in 2016 priced similarly to the Model S with an entry cost of around $100,000.
