Rolls-Royce 102EX details released
Showing at the Geneva Motor Show for the first time also is the Rolls-Royce 102EX Phantom Experimental Electric, a plug in version of the Rolls-Royce Phantom sedan.
News of the Rolls-Royce 102EX was covered a few days ago, however we've finally been handed the tech sheets to this massive marvel.
While the brilliant V12 is a fabulously smooth engine, it had to make way for the electric drivetrain, and so the naturally aspirated 6.75-litre petrol engine and six-speed auto have been replaced by a lithium-ion battery pack and two electric motors mounted on the rear sub-frame. A single speed transmission with integrated differential is how the drive gets to the road.
Each electic motor has a power output of 145kW giving the 102EX 290kW, which is down on the 338kW from the petrol engine. But torque is up - from 720Nm to 800Nm, and over a larger range as electric motors offer full torque from zero revs.
Rolls-Royce says that pre-testing demonstrates a potential range of about 200km, and a 0-100km/h time of just under eight seconds - moving 2.6 tonnes was never going to be easy. Top speed will be limited (to conserve range) to 160km/h.
For those really up with the technology, the tech sheet tells us that "the Nickel Cobalt Manganese battery chemistry holds around 230Wh/kg,a high energy density which is important in achieving an acceptable range between re-charges." Incidentally, the battery pack is said to be the largest ever fitted to a road car, but then this is a lot of car.
The 102EX's battery pack contains five modules of cells, a 38-cell module, a 36-cell module, and three smaller modules of ten, eight and four arranged in the shape of the original engine and gearbox assembly.
Three different charging units are fitted to the battery pack, which allow both single-phase - which can recharge in 20 hours - or three-phase charging, which takes eight hours. A charger is also fitted to enable induction - or wireless charging - a technology being trialled in Phantom EE.
Rolls-Royce's CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös commented:
“Today, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars begins an exploration into alternative drive-trains, seeking clarity on which technology may be suitable to drive Rolls-Royce motor cars of the future. The alternative drive-train we choose must deliver an authentic Rolls-Royce experience. It must be a technology that is right for our customers, our brand and which sets us on a sound footing for a sustainable future. That is why this project is so important.”
