Renault Dips Deeper Into India With the Triber SUV

French car maker Renault has unveiled an India-specific SUV in the Triber SUV which has been designed and produced just for the subcontinent.

Despite the Triber’s diminutive silhouette, it can seat seven passengers and joins Renaults SUV-heavy range in India, which consists of the widely available Duster and Captur and the more limited Kwid, which is available in India, Brazil, Indonesia and China.

The Triber will be on the larger end of Renaults spectrum of SUV’s; bigger than the Kwid and Captur and roughly the same size as the Duster—though it has the seven seats up on the Duster.

In the press release, Renault chief, Thierry Bolloré said that the company was still new to India, and aimed to double its sales in India by 2022.

“For that reason, we are bringing Renault Triber, another breakthrough concept, targeted for Indian’s core market. Renault Triber was conceived, developed and produced in India, for Indian customers first, before we take it to the world. It is a real game-changer.”

The SUV matches most of the rest of the brands design language, with a large Renault logo stamped on a prominent grille, with sleek headlights and thin LED strips acting as daytime running lights.

The inside is pretty simple and minimalistic, but the large display features Android Auto comparability in the more top-of-the-range options.

Keeping with the simple theme, the Triber only has one engine option; a 1.0-litre petrol motor offering 72 horsepower which Renault said “addresses the real needs of India users.”

The company has high hopes for the Triber, claiming it has no direct competitors in the segment and was intended to increase its sales in India to 200,000 vehicles per year over the next three years.

The Triber will be built at Renault’s Chennai plant, and will go on sale in the second half of this year.
