Nissan Patrol V8 sets sales record, Toyota LandCruiser still outsells it two-to-one

Demand for heavy-duty four-wheel-drives is off the charts as more Australians choose to holiday at home.

The Nissan Patrol has posted the best monthly sales ever for the current V8-powered model – and the highest result for the nameplate in 19 years – as large shipments arrived at once and were delivered to customers who ordered vehicles months ago.

And that's before the new Nissan Patrol Warrior edition arrives in showrooms.

Official new-car sales data released this week shows 1208 examples of the Nissan Patrol V8 were reported as sold in September 2023 – an increase of 152 per cent compared to the same month last year.

It was the best monthly sales result for the nameplate since 1460 examples were reported as sold in June 2004 (though this tally also included about 400 pick-up variants).

The Nissan Patrol's September 2023 sales figure was just 200 sales shy of the Toyota LandCruiser tally for the month (with 1404 reported as sold).

However, when year-to-date data is compared – from the start of January to the end of September 2023 – the Toyota LandCruiser still outsells the Nissan Patrol by approximately two-to-one (10,816 versus 5582), according to data compiled by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.

Meantime, there is increasing speculation the Nissan Patrol V8 petrol engine will switch to twin-turbo V6 petrol power when the new model arrives two years from now.

This would match a similar move with the Toyota LandCruiser which switched from a twin-turbo V8 diesel to a twin-turbo V6 diesel with the latest model.

Nissan appears to be well progressed with development of the next-generation Patrol.

A number of prototypes have been caught on camera during hot weather testing in the Middle East.

Nissan is yet to confirm if the V8 will live-on with the next Patrol – or whether it will need to downsize to a V6 to meet stricter emissions standards being introduced globally.
