New Mazda BT-50 revealed

Japanese brand reveals facelifted workhorse.

Mazda has given us its first look of its revised BT-50 workhorse ute.

Based on the initial image it appears not much has changed in the way of styling besides a new grille, headlights and wheels in keeping with Mazda's Kodo design language.

Mazda's current BT-50 has suffered from below expectaction sales - partly on the back of its polarising looks - in a time when Australian ute sales are soaring.

Mazda's local arm has had considerable input in the design of the new BT-50 according to Mazda Australia's marketing director Alistair Doak.

"Mazda in Australia has been very involved in the design of the updated model," Doak told Drive earlier this year. "We're one of the most successful markets for BT-50, so it makes sense in many ways."

More changes are expected inside too, with a revision of the dash including a larger infotainment screen to bring it in-line with Mazda's current range of cars and SUVs.

Engine and body variants will remain unchanged from the current line-up, with single cab, Freestyle and double cab.

The new BT-50 - which is reigning champion in Drive's Car of the Year best ute category - will come under increasing pressure to claw back market share with the release of new Nissan Navara, Mitsubishi Trition, Ford Ranger and Toyota HiLux models.

The new Mazda BT-50 is expected in Australian showrooms by the end of 2015.
