Mazda Koeru concept revealed

Mazda has revealed its take on a coupe-like SUV, revealing the new Koeru concept at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show.

Officially the Koeru is a design showcase for the next-generation of the Japanese brand's SUV range.  While there are some styling elements that could indicate the look of the upcoming CX-9 large SUV to be revealed at the Los Angeles motor show later this, the Koeru concept is understood to preview an additional body style under consideration by the Japanese car maker, potentially pointing to a sportier version of the popular CX-5 that could be called CX-4.

The Koeru pushes the brand's Kodo design philosophy with more exaggerated lines to give the car a "stronger presence" according to the press release.

The Koeru concept appears to be built on the same underpinnings as the current CX-5, due to its matching length and wheelbase dimensions, but the new styling is expected to be adaptable across the Mazda SUV range.

Technical details of the new car are light, with no mention of what's under the skin. However, Mazda does claim the concept features a breakthrough in the brand's weak area - road noise. It claims the Koeru is "significantly quieter and more relaxing" due to the brand's "breakthrough NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) technology" - but doesn't make any mention of what that breakthrough is.

Mazda Australia boss Martin Benders revealed recently that the new CX-9 would be the beginning of a new era for the brand, introducing new design and technology. Mazda has already revealed that the new CX-9 will introduce the first Skyactiv turbocharged petrol engine, a 2.5-litre four-cylinder unit that forms the starting point for the brand's 'Skyactiv II' platform of technology and powertrains.

"It's really the transitional vehicle to take us into the next generation of cars," Benders said in August. "And that's a new ballgame again."
