Mazda RX-9 comes at the expense of MPS models

Mazda boss says hot hatch plans on hold as company revives rotary engine.

Mazda has put its hot hatch plans on ice as the company concentrates on reviving its iconic rotary engine for a new-age flagship sportscar.

The Japanese brand, which stole the limelight at last week's Tokyo motor show with its stunning RX-Vision concept car, had said previously that MPS (Mazda Performance Series) variants of its regular passenger cars would only be developed when the company had laid the foundations for a complete overhaul of its core models.

But Mazda's President and CEO, Masamichi Kogai, told Drive the company now has no plans for high-performance hot hatches and will focus its resources on a production version of the RX-Vision, expected to be called RX-9.

"The performance vehicle on Mazda3 and other models we do not have a plan at the moment," Kogai told Australian media.

"We have to really have one best model…"

Kogai added that he feels stretching the company's engineering resources to develop MPS models could come at the expense of further improving upon its mainstream models.

"Because we have limited resources, if we develop too many derivatives then the resources we can allocate on the base models and core models will go down and we cannot perfect each of these models," he said.

Mazda offered MPS versions of the previous-generation Mazda3 hatch and Mazda6 sedan, both powered by a turbo charged 2.3-litre four cylinder engine that produced 190kW and 380Nm.
