Mazda BT-50 Recalled Over Possible Fire Risk
Mazda ute susceptible to fire-starting debris collection
Mazda has announced that BT-50 ute models sold in Australia are involved in the same possible grass fire recall action as recently announced for the mechanically similar Ford Ranger.
In Mazda’s case vehicles affected were offered for sale between July 2017 until January 2018 (in other words current dealer stock is also included), with over 20,000 vehicles involved.
The action concerns vehicles driven in long grass, with the potential for vegetation to become trapped in the vehicle’s underbody creating a potential fire risk owing to high exhaust temperatures.
This may lead to smoke, or in some instances could lead to a fire under the vehicle.
Mazda will attempt to contact all affected owners by mail. Until parts are available to carry out the recall Mazda suggests avoiding driving over long grass, and removing any debris that may have already accumulated.
Mazda has produced an illustrated guide for owners to follow to remove any under-vehicle vegetation (which can be viewed here) this guide is also applicable to Ford Ranger owners.
Mazda owners wishing to know more can contact Mazda Customer Support on 1800 931 024 or their local dealer who will also be able to assist with the removal of debris if required.
