Lotus unveils updated Elise Sport

Updates keep iconic roadster fresh.

Lotus has revealed a series of updates to its lightweight Elise roadster.

The British sports car manufacturer says the Elise and Elise S will be replaced by new Elise Sport and Elise Sport 220 models in mid-2016.

The new cars are slightly lighter – thanks to the addition of a motorsport-style battery – and feature new Bilstein shock absorbers and a sports driving mode as standard.

Buyers can also specify their cars with fetching tartan seats with trim inspired by the Lotus Esprit of 1976.

Weighing in at 866kg, 10kg lighter than the current model, the Elise Sport is powered by a 1.6-litre engine that produces 100kW and 160Nm, enough for it to reach 100km/h in 6.5 seconds.

He more powerful Sport 220 has a 1.8-litre unit with 162kW and 250Nm that can nip to the same mark in 4.6 seconds, though it uses more fuel to do so.

Lotus hasn't revealed final pricing or specifications for Australian examples of the car, which will arrive locally mid-way through 2016.
