Lamborghini spotted testing Tesla Model X and BMW iX electric SUVs

Lamborghini appears to be setting its sights on the US and Germany to develop the electric successor to its Urus.

Lamborghini may be benchmarking the Tesla Model X and BMW iX as part of the development of the next-generation Urus, due to adopt electric power when it arrives towards the end of the decade.

Shown a video posted to YouTube by Varryx, the SUVs are seen among various Lamborghini test vehicles heading out onto public roads.

The video's narrator says both vehicles appeared to be in a hurry to leave the facility – possibly to avoid being in front of the camera for too long – with the driver using the horn whilst waiting for the gate.

Lamborghini has confirmed the next-generation Urus SUV will be electric when it is introduced towards the end of the decade, after the company's first electric car, the Lanzador two-door coupe, in 2028.

Among the prototypes spotted outside the factory is the car maker's first plug-in hybrid, the Revuelto locally, which serves as the successor for the Aventador.

It combines a 6.5-litre V12 with two electric motors on the front axle, and one on the transmission, for peak power of 747kW – making it Lamborghini’s most powerful car ever.

Francesco Scardaoni, Regional Director of Lamborghini in Asia Pacific, told Austalian media recently the brand expects 60 per cent of buyers for the Revuelto to be new to the brand due to the V12 engine, considered a novelty in today's increasingly battery-powered times.

“We have a lot of new buyers and the reason why is because we are one of the few automakers keeping the V12 engine alive on a super sports car," Mr Scardaoni told Drive
