Keanu Reeves’ Formula One documentary series set for November release

Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story will tell the tale of the underdog championship victory which shocked Formula One fans around the world, with Keanu Reeves as host and executive producer.

A documentary series depicting one of Formula One’s greatest ‘Cinderella stories’ – hosted and executive produced by Canadian megastar Keanu Reeves – is due to be released on streaming service Disney+ from 15 November 2023.

The four-part series – titled Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story – is a documentary on the 2009 Formula One season, in which Brawn GP won the world championship despite not existing as a team 12 months prior to lifting the title trophy.

Announced in 2022, the series is a passion project of Keanu Reeves – best known for The Matrix and John Wick films – who will narrate all four episodes, as well as lead interviews with its protagonists.

Included in the series will be discussions with 2009 World Champion Jenson Button, his then-team-mate Rubens Barrichello,  team principal Ross Brawn and CEO Nick Fry, who performed one of the greatest upsets in Formula One history.

Shortly before pre-testing for the 2009 season, Honda pulled out of Formula One, with an 11th-hour deal by Brawn resulting in the former Ferrari team boss securing Mercedes-AMG engines for the cars.

After showing impressive speed in pre-season testing, Brawn GP carried the momentum through to the championship proper, where Button won six of the opening seven grands prix – giving him a healthy margin over the field, eventually securing the title at the penultimate race of the year.

Following the 2009 season, Button and Barichello moved on to McLaren and Williams respectively, while Mercedes-Benz bought Brawn GP and rebranded the team – later winning seven driver’s championships and eight constructors titles since.

In addition to the recently-recorded interviews, the documentary series will include archival footage – some of which Disney claims has never been seen before – from Formula One race weekends.

Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story will launch worldwide on Disney+ from 15 November 2023.
