Google tech for Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi

Android operating systems will likely come standard in vehicles within a few years.

Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi will team up with Google to introduce a range of intelligent infotainment systems to its cars.

The automotive alliance signed a multi-year agreement, partnering with Google to introduce Android operating systems into a range of vehicle models and brands.

The new technology will let customers use services such as Google Maps, the Google Assistant and the Google Play Store.

Access to thousands of existing applications will allow “drivers and passengers to leverage Google and Android’s capabilities” and the system is said to be compatible with other operating systems, such as Apple’s iOS.

By 2021, Google-developed Android systems will be embedded into Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi vehicles with a plan to provide “intelligent infotainment and customer-focused applications”.

By the end of 2022, the brands’ target is to increase sales to more than 14 million units per year.

In this time, the alliance plans to launch 12 zero-emission electric vehicles and new autonomous driving technologies to its fleet in a bid to challenge Volkswagen as the world's biggest automotive group.
