GMC Hummer EV driving range could be shorter than expected

The all-electric GMC Hummer EV – announced by General Motors last year – caused much excitement in a segment dominated by heavy petrol and diesel engines, but now there is news the driving range could be almost 30 kilometres less than originally claimed.

As reported by InsideEVs, a Hummer enthusiast noticed the discrepancy when updating his MyChevrolet app. The app quotes the maximum range for the Hummer EV dual-cab pick-up as 537km from its circa-200kWh battery, compared to the 563km-plus stated at the time of its unveiling.

GMC is yet to confirm an official EPA combined range value for the electric Hummer, and there is speculation the driving range on the app could be a placeholder until the manufacturer gets its official rating.

The electric Hummer, which will be offered in both dual-cab pick-up and SUV configurations, is on display this week at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

The aftermarket industry-only trade show allows manufacturers to display the speciality parts and accessories that can enable buyer personalisation.

Electric Hummers are available with nearly 200 extra products including an off-road recovery kit, off-road auxiliary lights, tow hooks, bonnet decals and under-seat organisers.

While there is still no date as to when (or even if) we will see the Hummer EV in Australia, production at GMC’s upgraded Detroit Assembly Plant is underway, with the vehicles expected to be on sale in the US before the end of the year.
